Hate Crimes Languange Added to Defense Bill, Corker Votes 'Nay'
The U.S. Senate voted 60-39 Thursday for cloture on debate of the Matthew Shepard Act. The legislations extends existing hate crime law to include disability, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Senator Corker and Senator Alexander both voted 'nay' on the cloture motion.
However, the legislation was attached as an amendment to the Pentagon's defense spending bill.
The defense bill is considered 'must-pass' legislation, but the White House is expected to veto due to the attachment of the hate crimes legislation.
